Network Meeting Checklist PDF Print E-mail

If you ever felt like a wallflower at a networking meet as I have on occasion, maybe this checklist will help you prepare for the next meeting.  I found this excerpt in the book called How to Create POWERFUL First Impressions by Kristi Daeda, a renowned Executive Career Coach and Executive Brand Strategist.

This book is part of her Executive Career Laser Guide series, to learn more about this and other currently available Guides, visit www.kristidaeda.com or email Kristi's team at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  See excerpt below

"The goal of any initial networking conversation is to open the door to a relationship of some kind. You can count your efforts successful if you’ve gotten a business card and a verbal commitment to further discussion – either in person or by phone.

From here, you’ll need to grow that relationship in a way that provides mutual value – and allows you to enjoy your interactions. But that’s a topic for another book.

  1. I know how I want to be perceived when networking, and can express it in words.
  2. I’ve developed a “look” that supports my desired perception.
  3. I feel ready to approach someone new with good eye contact, strong handshake and a smile.
  4. I have 4-5 icebreakers at the ready for starting conversations.
  5. I can describe what I do in a strong, focused sentence.
  6. I have committed to first discovering how I can be of help to the people I meet.
  7. I have memorized 5-6 questions to keep someone talking in our conversation.
  8. I have thought about questions people are likely to ask me, and how to redirect the conversation to them.
  9. I feel ready to confidently end a conversation and ask for a follow up meeting."

If you feel like you need more information on achieving the concepts of this checklist, please refer to Kristi's book mentioned above.

Be Yourself....

Casey Stengel, who managed the NY Yankees to seven World Series titles including five-in-a-row, knew a thing or two about getting the best out his players ...... Casey, always ready with a quick line to make his point, approached a dejected player who had repeatedly struck out and did not have any good answers for the coach. “I ‘m sorry coach, I just can’t hit a curve ball”, the player offered.  Casey replied, “So don’t swing at ‘um”.

“Hello I just wanted to say what a blessing the (CTW) class was to me.  The information in the book helped me up date my resume and gave me a great wealth of resources to be used in my job search. The leadership did a great job leading and guiding us along.  I haven't found a job yet but I am praying for God to lead me to where he wants me to be.  I currently serve as a Preschool Sunday School teacher and sing in choir. So I'm looking for part time work at this time.  I will recommend this class to others in my church and community. Thanks again for offering this workshop.”

“Well, the first thing that I would like to say about the Career Transitions Workshop is that I did not feel alone.  I met a lot of people that where going through the same things. When I was told by others that being laid off from a job, does not carry the shame that it used to carry; and that this might be a new opportunity to transition to a new career, I was feeling much better.

Receiving assistance with networking, resume building, helping me through the transitions of new opportunities, God's help, prayers, and Christian fellowship all lifted my spirits and gave me hope.

The workshops that helped me with the interviewing techniques, like always having questions ready, and being ready with an answer for that money question; helped clam my fears and helped my confidence while going through the interview process.

Learning these techniques, and along with Christian fellowship gave me the confidence to get that new job and return to school, so I could improve my skills and transition my career.

Friends of Barnabas encouraged me in a spiritual fashion, while providing a Christian support group that helped open the door to the new facets of my spiritual life and new career opportunities. I thank all of you and I thank God for the Christian fellowship that helped lift my spirits.
Thank you”

“Since being called to this ministry in March, I’ve been amazed and blessed at seeing God’s hand at work revealing the right job at just the right time for many of our clients. It’s also a blessing to see that real job security comes from a belief that any abundance in life comes from His hand and not anything that we do individually.”

A Ministry of Encouragement

The Friends of Barnabas was started to assist people in career transition.  We believe that people can help and encourage each other through the typically lonely and frustrating job search process.  After all, if most good jobs are found by networking, then it stands to reason that YOUR NEXT JOB will be found through a contact or network of people.  Let us help you find that next opportunity, and encourage you along the way!  Blessings from FOB.
